Fun read! I've been addicted to using fresh basil this summer, though I have to admit that I'm not so great with the other must-have herbs. Mark Bittman would shudder to see all the dried jars of thyme, et all in my cabinets!

That's very helpful! I never know which herbs to buy. I grown my own basil, so that's a non-issue, but the others are always a bit of a struggle. Thanks for the post!

Great advice on fresh herbs! I have become completely addicted to the French fines herbs mixture - parsley, dill, tarragon, dill, chives (and often chervil) - alas I don't grow all those at home.

When we planted our small herb garden, I just looked through the recipes that I liked to cook, and chose herbs in those, then scratched some there are hard to grow at home.

I treat my Hollywood Farmers Market weekly fresh herbs like flowers. I get them home and trim the stems. Then I put them into small "vases" on the kitchen window sill where they look great and smell better. I change the water and snip the stem ends again mid week. Any that are not used up by the next Sunday go in the compost bin. GREG
