So You Wanna Be the Next Food Blog Star

A view from inside restaurants

Hi, my name is Brooke and I’m a restaurant blogger. I’m not a Yelper, nor a restaurant reviewer, not a food-fanatic, or even an angry waiter on a rant. I’m a food writer and a restaurant professional with a strong point of view on what it is to work in the business of food.

For those of you just tuning in here at Food Woolf, this is a literary blog which offers a non-fiction account of a restaurant professional living life from inside of some of Los Angeles’ best restaurants.

Like a chef who produces food that she loves to eat for her customers, I work hard to create something beautiful here—first for myself and then for others. At Food Woolf, I want to give you something more than just a simple recipe and a fast paragraph.

I want to craft appetizing phrases—like ones I’ve discovered in the fine writing of M.F.K. Fisher and Michael Ruhlman—and delectable sentences you’d like to roll over your tongue a couple of times. I work hard to weed out unnecessary tirades and focus on the insightful behind-the-scenes moments that speak to bigger issues that affect diners. Sometimes, I even snap some photographs of great meals that make people want to dive through their computer screens and get eating.

It’s taken me a while (it’s been almost three years since I started this blog) to peel back the layers of my interests and find the core of who I am as a blogger. I am an artist and food lover who’s passionate about ingredients, committed to healthy and mindful eating, fired up about service, and have strong opinions about the ethics of food production and food writing.

So when the good people over at FoodBuzz suggested I take part in the first annual Project Food Blog—an online competition to find the next Food Blogging Star—I got curious. Yes, having the opportunity to have my work read by Dana Cowin, Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine, Pim Techamuanvivit, of Chez Pim, and Nancy Silverton,  my culinary hero and owner of Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza, was compelling enough. But what really appealed to me about the competition was the idea that this online contest was created to guide thousands of bloggers through a series of challenges that would lead every one of us towards self-discovery.

I’m an artist by nature and nurture; I know that great art doesn’t require a huge audience for it to exist. But I do know that art with an audience is a lot more fun when they’re applauding you. Which is why I am submitting this post into the Project Food Blog’s first round of judging.

Take for example Project Food Blog’s three judges. These three women pursued their art as quiet industry from the solace of their home and kitchens. Through their great perseverance and dogged desire to be the best at their craft–be it with words or the baking of bread—they found accolades, dedicated followers, and adoring fans. I’m up for the work. I’m down for the challenge.
